UFO
A Spatial Neon
The spherical neon is made of bent glass tubes filled with noble gases, which light due to an electrical discharge. This traditional technique of making spectaculars has a history reaching back to the first half of the twentieth century. Three-dimensional signs, such as Orbis’s globe at Aleje Jerozolimskie Street in Warsaw, are spectaculars of a special kind specific to communist countries like Poland. It’s the form of the globe that inspired the spherical shape of UFO. The neon consists of sixteen rings: eight white and eight red. The layered rings make up a white and red sphere, resembling the logo of the Polish-Japanese Academy of Information Technology. The neon is located atop the main building of the school at 86 Koszykowa street in Warsaw.
